Carla Amarelo Santos holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering since May 29, 2014, from the Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon. He is currently a professor of Polytechnic Education, in the area of Biotechnology, at the Escola Superior de Tecnologia do Barreiro, IPS.
He carried out research on microalgae biorefineries to obtain biofuels (biodiesel and biogas) at the Bioenergy Unit of the National Laboratory of Energy and Geology (LNEG), in Lisbon.
He is an expert in microbial cultivation in bioreactors (fermenters and photobioreactors) for various microorganisms growing under heterotrophic or photoautotrophic conditions.
He leads work package 2 in the REDWINE project with H2020 funding, focusing on the valorization of wine liquid effluents through microalgae, from 2021 to 2025. He coordinated an exploratory project at the Polytechnic of Setúbal, called ProteAlgaFeed, focusing on the valorization of solid waste from agro-industries for the production of liquid nutrient media for microalgae, from 2020 to 2022. He participated in the SIMBIOALGA Project funded by FCT, from 2011 to 2014. He has published 8 scientific articles in international scientific journals, presented 12 oral communications and 12 posters at international scientific conferences.
